FIRST NIGHT

“We’re free!” Candace grinned and tore rubber out of the reception hall parking lot. Devilish in her tuxedo, she winked at Emma, the auburn bangs from her boyish haircut falling into her eyes as she maneuvered the car onto the road.

Emma watched the wedding party fade into the distance and gave a jagged sigh of relief. “Wow. I can’t believe it.” She raised a shaking hand to her lips and blinked back happy tears. She didn’t know whether to call them husband and wife, or wife and wife, but whatever. They were married. It was legal, and they were about to spend their first night together. Like, married together.

After months of planning, haggling over prices, family drama, food allergies, venues, and where to go for the honeymoon, it was done. They were official. The wedding gown was packed in the bag back at the church and she’d changed into a more conservative pastel suit. No more rib-crushing girdles and nosebleed high heels. Now it was real women’s wear.

“God, I’m so glad to get out of that dress.”

“You looked great.” Candace reached for her hand, enveloping it in her own.

“So do you. Snappy tux, there.”

“Thanks.”

“How far is it to the hotel?”

“About ten miles. Then, tomorrow morning, we’ll check out the lineup Charlotte set up for us.”

Emma nodded. “Do you have any idea where she booked us?”

“All she gave me is the envelope on the dashboard there. Said it was our wedding gift and we’d better enjoy it.” Candace sent her a worried glance. “I tried to talk her into something at a spa but that girl... All she said was it would be unforgettable.”

Emma winced, too familiar with Charlotte’s sense of humor.

“Now that’s freaking me out.” Emma cringed. It had been her choice to not move in together until they were married. They’d met just after the laws changed in their state, and she was firm in her stance. Emma wanted a traditional wedding night and honeymoon, and much to her relief, Candace supported her. Too many of her friends had shacked up without taking the time to get to know the other person and later regretted it. Emma didn’t want to go down that road.

Now that the night was upon them, she had to admit a case of the nerves was starting to develop. Candace had never seen her without her makeup and her hair done perfectly. They’d dated, and of course slept together, but at the end of the day they each went home to their own apartments. For her that meant pink hair curlers and frumpy bedclothes. Not exactly the stuff of romance novels, but real life wasn’t most of the time, was it?

Her stomach growled and Emma shot a glance at Candace, hoping she hadn’t heard. She cleared her throat and played it off.

“Did you get anything to eat?” She’d been so busy dancing with friends, her father, and Candace, she hadn’t had much time to consume anything from the array of food their friends and family had brought for the occasion.
